Last night All Saints hosted the Borough’s Memorial
Service for the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
(1918-2003). Mandela visited Northampton in April 2000
whilst en route to Bedford to unveil a statue of the
prominent campaigner against Apartheid, Bishop Trevor
Huddleston. Our own Parish Priest, Fr David McConkey,
also worked for the peace and reconciliation movement
whilst working as Rector of St Elizabeth’s Harare in
Zimbabwe between 1994 and 2003.
Fr McConkey gave a stirring sermon to the congregation
of over 150 people on the life and work of Mandela, and
on the challenges still faced throughout Africa. We were
also delighted to host the Royal and Derngate Community
Choir, the Choir of the New Testament Church of God and
the New Ark Foundation African Choir, who gave
performances of Gospel and African music.
Representatives from six faith groups led the prayers
and the service concluded with the singing of N’kosi
The order of service can be downloaded here.
